Everyday thousands of people parade in and out of the subway and we hardly pay attention to those around us as we desperately try to get to our destinations on time .. I was there yesterday and began to notice an old man standing there by himself dressed in rags, his mental state was failing him, he was talking to himself as though there was another person standing beside him, soon his hands were wondering around thin air as he pretended to have a conversation with someone and began to shake hands with the ‘person’ beside him .. I couldn’t stop wondering what had led him to his mental state, was it old age? was he abandoned? forgotten? was it poverty that led him to insanity? as we got to the next stop he insisted on his friend to go first as he pointed out with his hands towards the door and soon left the station others were too busy reading their papers, listening to music and anxiously trying to figure out which stop was theirs, it was as though nothing had happened .. I wish that we lived in a society that cared, a society that didn’t forget others and had its doors always open. I can only hope that things would someday change but I know it would be a long battle to play ..
