Bystander Apathy

The other day my friend called me around midnight telling me that she just witnessed a couple of people beating someone up; I couldn’t believe that she was calling me instead of calling the cops, she even told me that others were passing by and they acted as though nothing was happening . This is a clear example of bystander apathy. For those not in the know it’s a psychological term used to describe the situation where people are less likely to intervene in emergency situations when there are other people around than when they are alone. How can we let someone die out there? What if that person was your brother? Is it really that hard to pick up the phone and call for help? ..

true a lot of ppl do that, i never witnessed something serious but i wonder if i would act the same. 3ad if they called for help, they wouldn't necessarily be involved so i can't see why ppl choose not to help. maybe fear or something

The reason they don't intervene is because they normally think others would do it, which is never the case!
being in crowded places doesn't make it safer for you when you are being assaulted or mugged.

weird :/

I's brain: It's not fear, it's the fact that they won't feel as responsible anymore because there are others to blame for it ..

3abeer: that's not really why they don't intervene though it plays a role in it but the main reason is because when they are alone the responsibility lies solely on them since they would be held accountable for not doing anything whereas when other people are around there are more people to blame, so being in a crowded place doesn't exactly make it safer like you said ..

I don't know about other people but me personally I stopped getting involved in public incidents here in Kuwait is because no matter how many times you call up 777 they never show up on time!! their always late to the scene! There were many previous incidents that I tried being a good citizen and call up 777 for them to be aware and everytime it just gets worse and worse with their service...So, i can't be bothered anymore because no matter how much I try it doesn't make a difference :\

Its because it is dangerous.

Long time ago.. people would just beat others... now they actually kill. I know a couple of guys who were killed because they intervened to stop a fight.
Yes its the right thing to do... but who's safe nowadays? I know for sure that no matter what you do, they'll get a was6a to prove that you were part of it.. they YOU were assulting them! it gets worse and worse everyday

yes its the right thing.. bss honestly.. some skip for a lowly reason.. some in fear for their lives.

howahkan: Oh I don't blame you, the service in Kuwait sucks, they should have spent all that money to improve their system instead of giving each person 200 ..

antihero: yes it's dangerous in the sense that you physically get involved to save someone, that's understandable but all you really need to do is pick up the phone and call for help that way you're not directly getting involved and so it's technically not dangerous and totally anonymous (Kuwait on the other hand is a completely different story) ..

Chica Bonita: I totally agree!! instead of giving away KD 200 to each person to pay their MTC bills, they should use that money to improve the messed up system!

anti-hero: yeah I can't see why they don't, like you said it's the least they could do to help ..

howahkhan: glad you think so :)

ling-bling: exactly, we should look out for one another instead of turning our backs and acting as though nothing happened .. thanks :)

At the very least any bystander can take out a mobile and start video taping, then take it to a police station.
