Why is it that whenever I try to have a decent conversation with someone they end up talking about other people? Whatever happened to talking about events and ideas? Are we really so preoccupied with other people’s lives? worse is when one start obsessing about those they have never met and I don’t mean just celebrities. How did we even end up in this situation? Did we suddenly decide that our own lives are too boring such that we started targeting others? It’s as though we have become so obsessed with other people’s lives that we fail to live our own.

Well its a sad truth regarding most cultures but in particular with a small country like Kuwait, it gets out of hand. I believe it is because creativity and self identity have been literally eradicated in our culture.. and we have become such a lazy culture that we enjoy gossip since it makes us feel more important or better about our own lives.

This is one of the most annoying (and popular!) traits. Try to avoid people like that and if you find yourself in that situation, let them know that you're not interested in that sort of chatter.

So true, people are to busy looking at flan oo 3elan to notice themselves. Part of it i believe is when they point out peoples mistakes then they would feel better about themselves.
i hate it!

I've noticed that happening more than usual. So what I usually did was to change the direction of the conversation to being about me or the person I'm speaking with, changing it to talk about an event, or anything else will not work, it has to be about someone, better be us than someone not present :/.

I agree with redblooded woman. Cant phrase it any better.

but, if you dont want them talking about that person/ or any other person ask them to stop. Some people will still not get it even after you tell them over and over though :(

red blooded woman: yeah it's a shame ..

3baid: will do

eshda3wa: yeah psychologically they pick on others to avoid being picked on themselves and so they tend to feel better about themselves thinking they belong to a certain group

happy woolf: lol sorry can't say I agree with you on that one

transparently: yeah I guess you're right in some way, better to talk about ourselves than someone random person ..

Cixousian Panic: oh believe me I know, I tried that with some people and they still don't get it !

Gossip, yeah it has become a part and parcel of one's life today. Which is not at all good. And the problem is people don't get the fact, that may be the other person may not be interested in gossip. It's really very sad!!

I agree with Eshda3wa. sadly, ppl talk about other's mistakes to make 'em feel better about themselves..
